Rachel (Eckenthal) Cortese, MS Ed, MS CCC-SLP, a licensed speech-language therapist, specializes in the evaluation and treatment of young children and adolescents with communication disorders. She is certified by the American Speech & Hearing Association (ASHA) and is a New York state certified teacher in speech and language disabilities. Ms. Cortese has over 10 years of combined classroom, clinical, and alternative therapeutic experience. Ms. Cortese's primary interest and expertise is in the evaluation and treatment of infants, toddlers, and school aged children with delayed language development, learning disorders, stuttering disorders, and communication impairments associated with autism. She also has extensive clinical experience working with children with behavioral difficulties, ADHD and selective mutism. Ms. Cortese is a strong advocate for family-centered care and strives to help children develop effective communication, behavior and social interaction skills that depend on speech and language. Ms. Cortese holds a master's of science in communicative disorders from the University of Wisconsin, Madison. She was a training fellow in the Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental Disabilities (LEND) program at the Waisman Research Center for Developmental Disabilities, a Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities. She has additional training in applied behavior analysis (ABA), and PROMPT, a specialized technique used to facilitate oral motor skills and to remediate speech production disorders. She is certified to lead It Takes Two to Talk-The Hanen Program for parents of children ages five and under with language delays and More Than Words- The Hanen Program for parents of children with Autism. She has completed training for The Lidcombe program, an early intervention behavior based treatment program designed for preschool children who stutter, and the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS-2), a standardized observation designed to assess behaviors related to autism spectrum disorders. In addition, she holds a master's degree in elementary education from St. Joseph's University in Philadelphia. Ms. Cortese brings a diverse skill set to the Child Mind Institute. She is a former Teach for America middle school teacher and has worked as an instructor at wilderness therapy programs in Idaho and Vermont, where she guided teenagers who struggle to regulate their behavior and emotions in remote, backcountry settings. She has specialized training and certifications in emergency medicine and as a wilderness first responder. At the Breckenridge Outdoor Education Center in Colorado she taught adaptive skiing and snowboarding to veterans, people with traumatic brain injuries, and children with developmental disabilities. She has been certified by the Professional Ski Instructors of America to teach individuals with visual and cognitive impairments. Previously, Ms. Cortese worked as a speech-language therapist for a specialized private school for children with autism in New York City. She has also worked as a speech-language therapist for the New York City Department of Education. She is skilled in developing speech and language intervention goals that help students to access the classroom curriculum. She is experienced in implementing a variety of classroom management techniques and has worked with teachers to develop and execute intervention plans for students who have difficulty regulating their behavior.

    Speech Buddies Connect and Speech Buddies Games allow users to communicate with other users on the platform. We define users as “speech-language pathologists,” or “speech therapists,” and “parents.” The intention of Speech Buddies Connect is to allow parents looking for speech therapy services for their children to contact and communicate with licensed Speech-Language Pathologists who provide speech services. Speech Buddies Games allows students to practice online exercises that can help improve their speech and articulation. Speech Buddies Games can be used by Students, Parents, and Speech-Language Pathologists.

    By using this service you agree that:

    • You are licensed in your state or country to provide speech services as a Speech Language Pathologist, Speech Language Pathologist Assistant, Speech and Language Therapist, or other health professional.
    • You have necessary permission from the student and parent, if necessary, to provide speech services.
    • You have permission to perform lessons and exercises with a given student.
    • You will not solicit members of Speech Buddies Connect for purposes other than providing private speech and language therapy services.
