It\u2019s a term used in Speech Pathology that means smoothness or flow in which sounds, syllables, words and phrases are joined together. While there are many types of fluency &#8212;\u00a0including language fluency, reading fluency, or fluency in reference to speaking a foreign language\u00a0&#8212; speech fluency refers to the ability to speak smoothly and easily.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Speech fluency disorders are conditions such as stammering or <a title=\"stuttering\" href=\"http:\/\/www.speechbuddy.com\/blog\/speech-therapist\/the-abcs-of-stuttering-in-children\/\" target=\"_blank\">stuttering,<\/a> <a title=\"cluttering\" href=\"http:\/\/www.speechbuddy.com\/blog\/speech-disorders\/speech-impediment-cluttering\/\" target=\"_blank\">cluttering <\/a>or even mumbling.\u00a0 While fluency tends to be an issue for kids who are just learning to speak, fluency can also be factor in determining how well an adult speaks.\u00a0 Do you struggle to get\u00a0your words out when trying to explain something? Do you become nervous or tense when you are asked to speak in front of others? If so, relax!\u00a0 There are simple steps that you can follow, or your child can follow to get on the path to smooth speech. And NO, I\u2019m not talking about \u201csmooth talking\u201d as in \u201cschmooze talking.\u201d Follow\u00a0these simple\u00a0steps to smooth speech fluency!<\/p>\n<h2>\u00a010 Simple Steps for Smooth Speech Fluency<\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li>Be a good <strong>role model<\/strong>. This is particularly important if the person trying to improve fluency is your child.\u00a0 Model the speech behavior you would like to see from your child.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Speak slowly<\/strong>. Don\u2019t rush to speech, it\u2019s difficult to do anything when you are in a hurry.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Breath<\/strong> naturally. Breath easily and naturally so that you do not run out of air when you talk.<\/li>\n<li>Start slowly. The slower you begin to speak, the more relaxed your vocal chords become.\u00a0 You can <strong>speed up gently<\/strong> as you gain confidence.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Practice public speaking<\/strong>. The more experience you have speaking in front of others, the easier and more fluent your speech will become.<\/li>\n<li>Keep your eyes and ears open. <strong>Become aware<\/strong> of how people are speaking around you may to help gauge whether\u00a0your speech fluency is good, or may need a little work. Listen for\u00a0differences in speaking patterns and rhythms.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Articulate consonants<\/strong>. Stop to articulate certain consonants such as \u201ct\u201d and \u201cb\u201d, and differentiate your vowel sounds clearly.<\/li>\n<li>Practice, practice, practice.\u00a0 Yes, that old saying rings true!\u00a0 <strong>Practice makes perfect<\/strong>, or at least better.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Sing!<\/strong>\u00a0 No, you don\u2019t have to sing in front of anyone, the shower will do.\u00a0 Singing helps with proper voice utilization, and you will learn about using air, breath, articulation and speed of your speech.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Be patient<\/strong> with yourself or your child. You cannot expect to learn to speak fluently and easily in one day. Give yourself or your child space to experiment and improve without a timeline.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The best way to improve your speech fluency, or your child\u2019s fluency is to allow yourself time each day to practice a few steps.\u00a0 Be confident!\u00a0 If there are certain words that are tripping you up, practice only those words until you get them right.
