Did you know that some of your favorite celebrities and high profile people have overcome speech impediments as children? Many business executives, actors, actresses, professional athletes and even politicians have struggled with speech problems from lisping to stuttering. King George VI was so embarrassed by his stutter that he hired speech-language pathologist and greatly improved his public speaking.\u00a0This training and its results are the featured in the 2010 film, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kingsspeech.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The King\u2019s Speech<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In celebration of the Academy Awards, here is a <strong>Bonus Trivia Question<\/strong> for you:<\/p>\n<p>Which Oscar-winning actress suffered from stuttering as a child? He is well known for his voice as Darth Vader in\u00a0<em>Star Wars,<\/em>\u00a0and his familiar voice is the voice of CNN. Jones is featured in the Stuttering Foundation&#8217;s\u00a0<strong><i>Famous People Who Stutter<\/i><\/strong>\u00a0brochure. He received the 2008 Screen Actors Guild Life Achievement Award for helping advancing literacy, the arts and humanities on a national and local scale.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Nicole Kidman:<\/strong>\u00a0 This Oscar award-winning actress is known for her performances\u00a0in<i>\u00a0<\/i><em>Dead Calm, The Hours, To Die For, Batman Forever,<\/em><i>\u00a0<\/i>and\u00a0<em>Rabbit Hole<\/em>. She suffered from stuttering as a child and ultimately overcame her stammer with hard work and speech therapy.<\/p>\n<p><strong style=\"font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.5em;\">Bruce Willis:<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.5em;\"> Bruce Willis has starred in more than 60 movies, including the with\u00a0<\/span><em style=\"font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.5em;\">Die Hard<\/em><span style=\"font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.5em;\"> series. Other popular films include\u00a0<\/span><em style=\"font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.5em;\">Pulp Fiction, Armageddon,<\/em><i style=\"font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.5em;\">\u00a0<\/i><span style=\"font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.5em;\">and<\/span><i style=\"font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.5em;\">\u00a0<\/i><em style=\"font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.5em;\">The Sixth Sense.<\/em><span style=\"font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.5em;\"> Being the leading actor in some of the greatest action movies, Willis has had stuttering problems throughout his youth and was always scared it would affect his acting career.<\/span><em style=\"font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.5em;\">\u00a0<\/em><span style=\"font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.5em;\">In an <\/span><a style=\"font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.5em;\" title=\"interview for GQ Magazine\" href=\"http:\/\/www.gq.com\/entertainment\/celebrities\/201303\/bruce-willis-interview-gq-march-2013#ixzz2KiGzbPY5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">interview<\/a><span style=\"font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.5em;\">\u00a0for\u00a0<\/span><em style=\"font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.5em;\">GQ M<\/em><span style=\"font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.5em;\">agazine, Willis said he felt acting helped him overcome his stuttering.<\/span><b style=\"font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.5em;\">\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<p><\/p>\n<h3><b>Famous Athletes Who Overcame a Speech Impediment<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Michael Phelps<\/strong>: Michael Phelps, one of the greatest Olympians of all time with a record 22 medals (18 of them gold!), confessed to being teased about his speech impediment as a child.\u00a0\u201cWhen I talked fast, I\u2019d drop my Ls and add Ss to words, and if I tried to tell people I didn\u2019t have a lisp, I\u2019d usually lisp the word lisp,\u201d Phelps wrote in his book\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Michael-Phelps-Beneath-Surface\/dp\/1582619980\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Michael Phelps: Beneath the Surface. <\/em><\/a>That certainly didn&#8217;t stop him from pushing his personal limits to achieve greatness in his field.<\/p>\n<p><b>Tiger Woods<\/b>: Tiger Woods is a professional golfer whose achievements rank him among the most successful golfers of all time. Tiger Woods had stuttering problems at childhood but he got past it through hard work and practice. He admitted doing everything possible to conquer his speech impediment including talking to his dog until he would fall asleep. He has since become one of the most successful golfers the world has ever known.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bill Walton: <\/strong>Bill Walton is an<strong> <\/strong>NBA All-Star and member of Basketball Hall of Fame. He is also a well-known NBC Sports commentator. Walton led the NBA in both rebounds per game and blocked shots per game in 1976-77, and was selected to the NBA All-Star Game but did not participate due to an injury. Walton has had a life long problem with his speech and communication skills.<\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<p><\/p>\n<h3><b>Politicians Who Overcame a Speech Impediment<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Vice President\u00a0Joseph Biden:<\/strong>\u00a0 He\u00a0began his political career when he was\u00a0first elected to the Senate in 1973 at the age of 30, making him the sixth-youngest senator in U.S. history. In an interview with People Magazine,\u00a0Biden opened up about his speech impediment and how his mother\u2019s support helped him overcome his stuttering.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Winston Churchill:<\/strong> He served as the British prime minister from 1940 to 1945 and again from 1951 until 1955. A noted statesman and orator, Churchill was also an officer in the British Army and an author. He<b> <\/b>described himself as having a speech impediment, which he consistently worked to overcome. There are many sources that claim that in addition to stuttering, Churchill suffered from a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/2012\/07\/14\/156720829\/winston-churchills-way-with-words\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">lisp<\/a> and the condition known as cluttering.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Answer to Trivia Question:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b><\/b>Julia Roberts suffered from stuttering as a child.
