What do these three things have in common? They are all narratives. They are stories you might tell a friend, as a child to tell you or share with a child. Stories are an important part of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.speechbuddy.com\/parents\">speech and language.<\/a> Children need to develop the ability to logically and accurately recall details and the timely of events in addition to meaningful descriptions of what occurred. Children working on articulation need to move from saying sounds at the syllable level to within a short sentence and eventually, in connected speech. Storytelling is an important area to target in speech therapy and there are some great new tools to do it. Using the iPad, some great <a href=\"http:\/\/pinterest.com\/lasenders\/apps-programs-for-digital-storytelling-narrative-l\/\">storytelling apps<\/a> help children develop and engage with their narrative while providing multisensory feedback. <a href=\"http:\/\/mindwingconcepts.com\/Language-Development-Literacy-RTI-blog\/taking-paper-out-of-the-story\">They are engaging<\/a>, easy to save and share and return to later for editing or expanding.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Using the apps below, SLPs can target language skills by:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Creating stories<\/li>\n<li>Retelling personal narratives<\/li>\n<li>Problem solve (e.g., what should the character do next?)<\/li>\n<li>Practicing and using correct verb tenses<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>SLPs can <a href=\"http:\/\/www.speechbuddy.com\/blog\/speech-therapy-techniques\/using-apps-to-improve-articulation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">target articulation by<\/a>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Importing and constructing stories using only target sounds (e.g., lets make a story all about \/r\/ words)<\/li>\n<li>Recording and giving auditory feedback and self monitoring opportunities to children using their own voice<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/itunes.apple.com\/us\/app\/puppet-pals-hd\/id342076546?mt=8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Puppet Pals HD<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>What makes puppet pals stand out is the ease of recording and creating a story with multiple backgrounds and characters. Children can drag a variety of cartoon characters, or important their own photo, into and out of a scene while the iPad records the actions. Upon playback, children can hear their own voice and see their actions on screen while characters move and engage. Simple save the videos to your camera roll for easy playback. This could be great for social stories or discussing dialogue between two characters using word bubbles. According to the developers, users can \u201cYou decide\u00a0the ideal position\u00a0of the character:\u00a0thanks to the\u00a0joints\u00a0of the limbs,\u00a0this\u00a0will be easy and funny.\u00a0Then add\u00a0wigs, hats,\u00a0expressions and\u00a0objects.\u00a0\u2028Fill\u00a0the balloons\u00a0in\u00a0with jokes, wishes for\u00a0a Merry\u00a0Christmas or\u00a0a happy\u00a0birthday.\u00a0\u201c This would be great for role-play or conversation skills.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>This Is My Story (And I&#8217;m Sticking To It)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>While the above apps are great for importing your own photographs, this app comes with a variety of cartoon graphics and child-friendly images that kids can use to add to and create their stories. It comes in three great modes: make a story, match a story and read a story. This app incorporates images with words and reads the text aloud to promote literacy skills. In the Match a Story mode, kids will find the sticker that matches the silhouette on the page to complete the sentence. This can be helpful for auditory comprehension skills (e.g., listen to the story, what picture do we need?). In Read A Story mode the app will read back stories already created by the child.
