The martial arts school was founded by Lisa Chin, a special education teacher with a black belt in Tae Kwon Do. FirefliesNY\u2019s Lisa Chin teaches this Korean style of martial arts to children with autism by blending music\/movement, balance, stretching and breathing exercises. By using the Applied Behavior Analysis<\/a> (ABA) method, Chin is able to teach her students five\u00a0major principles of Taekwondo:<\/p>\n\n- Self-Control<\/li>\n

Super Soccer Stars Shine is another great program designed to teach children with developmental and intellectual disabilities important life skills through a sport\u2014soccer. With the help of licensed educators and therapist, they have designed a developmental appropriate curriculum that promotes the growth and improvement of each child. They are located all over NYC, but with 17 locations here in Brooklyn, Super Soccer Stars has become a very popular special needs program\u00a0(and summer camp) for kids of all ages.<\/p>\n
The Shine Program has seven focuses points: gross motor skills, self awareness, agility, balance and coordination, self-confidence, task completion, socialization, and teamwork.<\/p>\n
Children with autism or other developmental disabilities often have difficulties with\u00a0motor coordination or\u00a0attention deficit. In a sport like soccer, these two things play a major role.\u00a0How can\u00a0a child facing these challenges\u00a0run and kick the ball to fellow teammates? Teamwork is key.
